Yes, I love the Temptations Movie...but some corrections

YES....I love the Temptations Movie....and have watched it so many times I know it by heart

However, I do want to set some things straight here

Otis wrote the book but did NOT have production control of the tv movie
The movie came out shortly after the death of Melvin
Melvin (by all accounts) was the sweetheart that he was shown to be in the movie
However, the movie sort of neglected the fact he was a good family man and dad,
as well as being the best Bass singer ever and Otis Williams Best Buddy Forever

Melvin did NOT die in front of Otis and his mother...Melvin DID destroy his health due to cortisone shots he kept taking to ease the pain of the RA he was inflicted with. He developed diabetes
and heart problems from the cortisone shots *(and maybe did not recover fully from the time he was shot by the car thief)

However, the Tempts recorded their last song with Melvin "Blue" on the album "For Lover's Only"...the last song Melvin sang on was "Life is But a Dream"....and that was the last time Otis sang with him. Melvin took ill, lapsed into a coma and died 6 days later in hospital, NOT in his mother's kitchen.

Another problem in the movie is David Ruffin's tragic death....he admittedly was brought to the hospital but the driver told them "This is David Ruffin of the Temptations"....and then the driver/rat took off...the hospital tried to save David but failed...however, he was NOT left in a morque unknown as the movie states...that is just wrong

I also feel that Paul Williams was given an unfair treatment and I will make a whole other post about this

One thing that I have read : people who knew David Ruffin all praise the talents of Leon in his portrayal of the great singer!

I love the movie. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out the truth.

I think Leon Robinson is awsome, he can sing his heart out. I enjoyed all the characters, they all did a great job.

Also David was never given to a pimp for his mom's debt.

I am also a big fan of the temptations I have to state that iam disappointed in the movie not being what was told (based on a true story)..the great details of struggles and death are said not to be true!..smh..however I still to this day enjoy the movie for its major 'fact'..the original tempations was an outstanding male group

According to a website, I forgot the name but Rose Franklin (passed in 2013)did an interview stating Melvin Franklin suffered a seizure in his sleep after coming home from playing basketball on February 17th. I'm not sure if it's true or not about him playing basketball

You all have to remember. It's a movie. Not the full biography of their lives. We know that some things were left out. That's why you have to research further to get more information. I love the movie....regardless of nit-pickers! Much love...Temptaions forever!

I was NOT a big fan of the movie because it had too many contradictions!

Unknown said...

Not nit picking...if anyone does a book or a movie about me, it needs to be accurate. I mean whats wrong with the truth? I loved The Temptations.....and then a movie that has to straight out lie... probably for ratings...thats TV for YA...LIARS

Contradictions or not, I love the hell out of this movie!

I have seen this movie many times, and have just found this blog today. Maybe someone can answer my question:

At Melvin's funeral, the camera pans left from Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy, past Otis, past Mama Rose and another woman, then lingers on the next person - a man in a black leather hat.

My guess is that he is someone of significance, since he was in the front row, and the camera paused on him. Is he the "real" Otis Williams?

Me too because movies are edited for television I suppose some things have to be rescripted for movie purposes and most movies are not going to be exact as the book. Read the Color Purple and them watch it. So much was left out and changed. It's just the way it is....I still love the movies though.

The movie never said Blue died in his mother's kitchen, you see him go in the kitchen and they called for him, yes it jumped to the funeral but that is your assumption that he died in the kitchen. Just because the movie didn't get into a full account of what happened once he collapsed in the kitchen but one might believe that they didn't just bury him and probably took him to the hospital. People get too worked up off of celebrities lives. This was from Otis's account not Blue's or David Ruffin's.

So unknown --do you mean people get so worked up like you're doing -- the movie scene did lead us to think he died in his mother's kitchen - as humans we take what evidence is presented to us and we evaluate on that - kind of how you are leading and directing us to believe you are just another arrogant hostile person - lighten up !

I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie. I love it n the guys so very much. It is strange that as much as I've wanted to watch again, I chose today of all days ; the 25th anniversary of Blues death. Blessed to have grown up on their music, n also to have this movie to watch ( even if it isnt exact ). TemptationsForever ❤

I love the movie the only thing I felt wasn't fair they should Paul Williams funeral, but didn't show Eddie Kendricks they just mentioned he had died. I love them all they didn't even mention that he left kids also that he was a father and David also. They could have provided more information on all of their life a little more. I hate when they do movies on people's life and they leave out or add something that's not true if your writing about their life be truthful..

Great movie. Sad the four died before their time. What a waste.

The movie was the best movie ever! And yes get real there was a lot left out. The movie would have been a week long! It would have been cool if possible a series was made with more information. But....you know we can always get all the I information on each one by googling each individual name. THE MOVIE WAS AWSOME PERIOD!

I love the movie and I watch it all the time, but I don't know why they didn't show what happened to Otis Williams mother and her husband edgar and doesn't say anything about how Paul Williams wife and children are doing.. I wish it was a little more detailed.

Sometimes who have to alter something to respect the privacy of a person I understand what was done and because I do my own homework on things that matter to me it's not disappointed....Just a good semi fiction movie that is all.

I have sicklecell anemia which is a bad illness I was born with that hurts like hell if my cells connect together cause of their weird shape of a question mark..and the pain hits anywhere anytime and I have to be admitted in the hospital for days weeks or months getting iv narcotics to feel a little better..now I told that story cause Paul Williams had to suffer through the same thing. He had sicklecell anemia and instead of them saying that in the movie they made his pain and suffering from alcoholism. Which wasn't true. Tboz from the rnb group tlc also have sicklecell anemia and made sure her story was told in their movie... Larenz Tate and prodigy from the rap group mobb deep also suffer from that illness. Paul Williams story should have been told the right way, period....

The fact that Otis the last living member didn't have any rights or saying in his own life movie is so wrong and don't make since..y would ppl get together to write about ppl lives and make their movie and decide to not ask the member of his life what happened in his life so they can make a great movie about them..so weird they did that to the temptations.. But what's gud is everyone who's famous and wanted their story told made sure that didn't happen to them..the new edition movie, TLC movie, hell lots of celebs made sure their movie didn't come out as a lie and made sure they got paid what they deserved for putting their life out their for the world to see.

Sorry my reply took so long ... I hope you are as well as can be expected with RA. The Temptations were more than a group, they were people who put together the music of my youth. It was HARD watching the movie and re-living the deaths, but it is a good movie. Anyway I hope you're doing well and still very active, may God healing hand surround you,in Jesus name ... I pray for your health ....
